NOVA (CC) 7 PM 7. A Marine uses a cylindrical coding device during WWII. An examination of how the deciphering of secret messages has shaped major events of the 20th century. Archival footage and newly released materials trace the birth of cryptanalysis, the science of breaking codes. Historians and early codebreakers recall how America's entry into World War I was precipitated by a British-decoded German telegram; and how the U.S. soon began code-breaking ventures of its own. A review of code-breaking during World War II illustrates how information from unscrambled messages proved vital to a number of Allied victories, including the Battle of Midway, generally considered to be the turning point of the war in the Pacific.
