What began as a 30-minute short evolved into this masterly three-hour 1994 documentary that chronicles the struggles of two friends who hope to escape Chicago's housing projects by playing in the NBA. From 1987 to 1991, the filmmakers collected more than 250 hours of footage of William Gates and Arthur Agee. The heart-tugging result places sports in a wider socioeconomic context, creating a portrait of family life, illustrating the physical, emotional and financial pressures, and exposing recruiting practices of high schools and colleges. As Gates says: "Basketball was my ticket out of the ghetto, but it became more of a job than a game to play." Directed by Steve James. (3:00)
