  • HOOP DREAMS (1994)
What began as a 30-minute short evolved into this masterly three-hour 1994 documentary that chronicles the struggles of two friends who hope to escape Chicago's housing projects by playing in the NBA. From 1987 to 1991, the filmmakers collected more than 250 hours of footage of William Gates and Arthur Agee. The heart-tugging result places sports in a wider socioeconomic context, creating a portrait of family life, illustrating the physical, emotional and financial pressures, and exposing recruiting practices of high schools and colleges. As Gates says: "Basketball was my ticket out of the ghetto, but it became more of a job than a game to play." Directed by Steve James. (3:00)

  • SPACE JAM. (1996)
Michael Jordan scored a $200 million slam-dunk at the box office with his 1996 film debut, a fantasy that teams the NBA superstar with Warner Bros.' Looney Tunes characters. The movie's villains are diminutive extraterrestrials who kidnap Bugs Bunny and company to save an outer-space theme park. The "wascally wabbit" hopes to win their release by challenging the aliens to a basketball game. Although Bugs has enlisted Jordan's help, he's unaware that the aliens have "stolen" the talents of Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing and other NBA stars. Rated PG for strong language. Bill Murray plays himself. Stan: Wayne Knight. (1:30)
