Eight Oscar nominations went to John Huston's 1985 comedy of manners, marriage and murder among mobsters. Richard Condon and Janet Roach adapted the offbeat screenplay from Condon's novel about the Brooklyn-based Prizzi crime clan, and what happens when its chief enforcer, middle-aged Charley Partanna (Jack Nicholson), is swept off his feet by a California beauty named Irene Walker (Kathleen Turner). Even the revelation that Irene is a highly successful hit woman (whose embezzler husband he has just bumped off) gives Charley only momentary pause: "Do I ice her? Do I marry her? Which wanna dese?" With the blessing of the Godfather, they wed and settle into domestic bliss—until each is contracted, by a different Prizzi, to rub out the other.
