Jane Curtin moves both comedy and drama as an upscale 39-year-old named Julia Odsart, who has a sound marriage and a rewarding career as a high-powered political adviser. Now Julia decides she wants to have a baby, too. That comes as unwelcome news to Julia's husband of 10 years, 57-year-old Hal (Dabney Coleman), a successful businessman and father of two from a previous union. "When we got married," he reminds her, "we agreed not to have any kids. You said you didn't want any kids." Her terse reply: "I've changed my mind." Hal takes comfort, though, from the counsel of his secretary Elsie (Lorence Stanley), who tells him to relax. She'll never get pregnant. The statistics are in your favor! Famous last words Julia does get pregnant, which prompts a mental crisis—and second thoughts. As she tells her secretary Fran (Lucy Webb): Pro Bono Rapp is easy. Magna cum laude is easy. But having a baby is not easy. Having a baby is hell!
