sometimes love is just beyond your nose... Steve Martin, a man with a nose for unusual parts, writes and stars in the sweet-natured 1987 update of Cyrano de Bergerac. The Edmond Rostand classic deals with facial deformity and ill-fated love in terms of tragic irony, while Martin's essentially faithful screenplay substitutes comic charm and upbeat good feels. It is set in Whittington State where small-town fire chief C.D. Bass (Martin) finds love a siren sacrificed by nose that emboldens him from pursuing the woman of his dreams, astronomer Roxanne Kowalski (Daryl Hannah), who is attracted to his burly subordinates, Chris (Rick Rossovich). But Chris gets tongue-tied around women—until C.D. helps him impress Roxanne by ghostwriting an eloquent love letter, ironically courting her himself. PARENTHOOD Steve Martin leads a fine ensemble cast in director Ron Howard's sardonic tribute to the pressures and perils of raising kids. Gil Buckman (Martin) is determined to be a better dad than his own remote father (Jason Robards). Coaching Little League and jeopardizing career advancement to spend more time with his family, Gil is perplexed when his 8-year-old son is labeled emotionally disturbed. Meanwhile, Gil's siblings are having no better. Divorced sister Helen (Oscar nominee Dianne Wiest) is struggling with two troubled teens, while brother-in-law Nathan (Rick Moranis) is teaching his toddler lucidness and Kula in hopes of spawning a genius—much to the dismay of his wife, Susan (Harley Kozak). Nathan, Susan complains, "she's a weird chick." Topping the family tree is younger brother Larry (Tom Hulce), a garconer who breezes in with his disgruntled son, Cood. The 1989 film is rated PG-13 for strong language and adult themes. (2 hrs., 5 min.)
