Jodie Foster won a Best Actress Oscar for her role as a rape victim whose lifestyle prejudices her quest for justice. Sarah Tobias (Foster) is a waitress who likes to drink, smoke pot and drive around with a license plate that spells SKY SAD. One night, while trying to cheer up after a fight with her boyfriend, Sarah visits a bar, where she meets and flirts with some patrons—and (in a graphically violent sequence) winds up being gang-raped on a pinball machine. Deputy DA Kathryn Murphy (Kelly McGillis) is brought in to prosecute the case and, believing that Sarah's reputation would make her a poor witness, cuts a deal to have the rape charge reduced to "reckless endangerment." Enraged, Sarah accuses Kathryn of selling out, a charge the prosecutor denies, until she meets a witness to the assault who sneers: "(Sarah's) a whore. The next time she does another sex show, tell her I'll be right there to cheer her on." That's when Kathryn decides to reopen the case and prosecute the guys who just stood by and cheered on the rapists. Rated R for violence strong language and partial nudity, the 1988 film was directed by Jonathan Kaplan ("Heart like a Wheel").
