    The Academy Award-winning Best Picture of 1985. Danish author Karen Blixen (1885-1962), who wrote under the name of Isak Dinesen, recalled her years as the manager of a Kenya coffee plantation in her 1938 memoirs "Out of Africa." From that book and other of her writings, plus two Blixen biographies, Kurt Luedtke fashioned an Oscar-winning screenplay that takes the spirited Karen (Meryl Streep) from the beginnings of a loveless marriage of convenience in 1914 Denmark to unexpected danger and romance in British East Africa. There, she faces a series of challenges-including the long absences of her indifferent husband Bjar (Klaus Maria Brandauer)-with impassioned independence. Often left alone, Karen grows attracted to adventurer Denny Finch Hatton (Robert Redford) and finds in him the love lacking in her marriage. Also lauded with Oscars: director Sydney Pollack; cinematographer David Watkins; composer John Barry; the film's art direction and sound. Rated PG: strong language, adult themes. From her father, Beryl inherited a love of horses and a strong strain of independence—both of which served her well later on in life as a trainer of champion Thoroughbreds and as a daring aviator.
