Danish author Karen Blixen (1885-1962), who wrote under the name of Isak Dinesen, recalled her years as the manager of a Kenya coffee plantation in her 1938 memo- irs "Out of Africa." From that book and other of her writ- ings, plus two Blixen biographies, Kurt Luedtke fashioned an Oscar-winning screenplay that takes the spirited Karen (Meryl Streep) from the beginnings of a loveless marriage of convenience in 1914 Denmark to unexpected danger and romance in British East Africa. There, she faces a series of challenges-including the long absences of her indifferent husband Bror (Klaus Maria Brandauer)-with impassioned independence. Often left alone, Karen grows attracted to adventurer Denys Finch Hatton (Robert Red- ford) and finds in him the love lacking in her marriage. Stefanie Powers excels in this fact-based 1988 TV-movie, playing a fascinating free spirit whose circle embraced characters from "Out of Africa." Born in England in 1902, Beryl Markham (née Clutterbuck) was uprooted at age 4 to British-ruled Kenya, where she grew up with her father on a farm he carved out of the rugged highlands. From her father, Beryl in- herited a love of horses and a strong strain of independence-both of which served her well later on in life as a trainer of champion Thor- oughbreds and as a daring aviator. FAT MAN ON A BICYCLE (Goes Norse) 7/12/88 FAT MAN ON A BICYCLE (GOES NORSE), PART 1 British radio personality Tom Vernon cycles 1500 miles from Norway to the Russian border in a four-part (and two-wheeled) Scandinavian tour. The portly pedaler's first stop is Stavanger in southern Norway, where he jests with seaman Erik Bye about the country's bloody seafaring past. He asks: "What has made you peacemak- ers now?" Bye responds: "We're too few to cause any trouble. I mean four million Norwe- gians, what can we do? If we had been 140 mil- lion, you would have heard from us." In Stavang- er Vernon also observes Constitution Day cele- brations, including the predawn rousing of teach- ers by many graduating high-school students. Next is a stop in Bergen, a commercial sea town, where Vernon talks with radio commenta- tor Ivar Garberg about Norway's social problems; and meets Jan Damm, a World War II Resistance leader who saved his own neck at his court-mar- tial by speaking in a slang his Nazi prosecutors couldn't understand. From there, Vernon moves on to Voss, where he views a child "wedding" and plays a 1912 violin crafted from mother-of- pearl and elephant bone; and Trondheim, where he samples a batch of homemade beer-a bev- erage the brewer claims is so strong that "you could drive your car on it!"
