John Hurt reprises his
role as the Storyteller in
this saga of a young
boy's quest to encounter
fear—something he's
never experienced.
That youngster, who's
fittingly named Fearnot
(Reece Dinsdale), is a good-for-nothing in the
eyes of his father (Peter Jonfield). Fed up, the fa-
ther sends his son "off into the world with nothing
to guide him but a bag of shillings, a fiddle and a
fool's errand": to learn the meaning of fear.
On his journey Fearnot takes up with a tinker
(Willie Ross) who offers—for a price—to teach
him how to shudder in fear. But after a close en-
counter with a hideous
swamp monster, and the
monster's temptress
daughters, Fearnot turns
the tables by mesmeriz-
ing the creatures with his
fiddle music.
Finally, at a forbidding
castle, Fearnot is presented with a crucial test by
an unearthly hall-man (Frederick Warder). But it
is not until he returns home to his sweetheart
Lidia (Gabrielle Anwar) that the elusive emotion
finally surfaces.

Call of the Wild 6/22/97
A plaintive 1997 adaptation of Jack London's w/Rutger Hauer.
1903 adventure classic about "the reign of
primitive law."
Although Rutger Hauer is the human star of
the stately Canadian film, it's told from the point
of view of Buck, a sensitive and intelligent St.
Bernard-Labrador. Kidnapped from his Califor-
nia home, Buck is sold as a beast of burden in
the Yukon, where the mistreated animal bonds
with prospector John Thornton (Hauer). But
Buck yearns to run free, and is drawn with ever
increasing urgency to "the call of the wild."
Richard Dreyfuss narrates. Perrault: Luc Mor-
