Although Rutger Hauer is the human star of the stately Canadian film, it's told from the point of view of Buck, a sensitive and intelligent St. Bernard-Labrador. Kidnapped from his California home, Buck is sold as a beast of burden in the Yukon, where the mistreated animal bonds with prospector John Thornton (Hauer). But Buck yearns to run free, and is drawn with ever increasing urgency to "the call of the wild."
