2246. BEETLEJUICE
A laugh after death experience.
BEETLEJUICE
This off-the-wall 1988 comedy about life after
death oozes with gruesome special effects.
Adam and Barbara (Alec Baldwin, Geena De-
vis), a young couple, live in a picture-postcard
New England town. After a car accident, they
come home to find a copy of the Handbook for
the Recently Deceased. Says Barbara, sullenly:
"I don't think we survived the crash."
Being dead, however, isn't the problem. The
problem is the living, specifically the ghastly fam-
ily that buys the house, Charles (Jeffrey Jones)
wants only to "relax and clip coupons," but his
wife, Delia (Catherine O'Hara), an avant-garde
artist, insists on redecorating. And morose
teenager Lydia (Winona Ryder), an amateur
photographer, won't be cheered by the prospect
of having a denroom. "My whole life is a dark-
room," she declares. "One big dark room."
All this is too much for the sweet, dead couple.
Failing to scare the family out of the house them-
selves, they resort to hiring Betelgeuse (Michael
Keaton), a crude, lecherous ghoul who claims im-
peccable qualifications for the job: "I've seen
'The Exorcist' about 167 times."
Rated PG; strong language. Tim Burton ("Free-
way's Big Adventure") directed. Robert Goulet
and Dick Cavett have cameos. Juno: Sylvia Sid-
ney. Otto: Glenn Shadix. (1 hr., 35 min.)

A STRANGER IN THE FAMILY.
2248. Dinosaur! Debut.
with Walter Cronkite 9/8/91
(4-Parts)
1. The Tale Of A Tooth. The discovery of a gi-
ant tooth in 1824 exposes the long-hid-
den secret of the dinosaur and sparks a 9/8/91
worldwide controversy.
2. The Tale Of A Bone. The trail of the di-
nosaur leads to the American west where 9/9/91
the discovery of a huge cache of fossils in
the 1870's led to a frantic "bone rush."
3. The Tale Of An Egg. In 1922, an American 9/10/91
expedition searching for the origins of
the human race makes a startling discov-
ery; a nest of dinosaur eggs.
4. The Tale Of A Feather. One of the world's 9/11/91
most valuable fossils has all the hall-
marks of a dinosaur except one; it has
feathers! Walter Cronkite explores the
staggering possibility that birds are the
descendants of the dinosaur.
