THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS
Daniel Day-Lewis (pictured) stars in a visually stunning
adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper's 1826 classic.
The story is set in New York's Adirondack Mountains in
1757, during the French and Indian War. British-born Al-
ice and Cora Munro (Jodhi May, Madeleine Stowe) are
being escorted by Maj. Duncan Heyward (Steven Wad-
dington) through the wilderness to join their father, Col.
Edmund Munro (Maurice Roeves), at Fort William Henry,
which is under siege by the French. En route, they're be-
trayed by their scout, Magua (Wes Studi), and ambushed
by Hurons. But they're rescued by the Mohican Chingach-
gook (Russell Means), his son Uncas (Eric Schweig) and
the woodsman Hawkeye (Day-Lewis), an orphan of mas-
sacred white settlers. What follows is a series of adven-
tures as they try to get the women to safety, during which
Hawkeye forms an attachment to Cora.
TV veteran Michael Mann (Miami Vice) directed this
1992 film, which won an Oscar for its sound. Rated R for

The documentary
—an oral history that
is supplemented with
stills, artwork and at-
mospheric cinema-
tography—relies on
the recollections of
tribal leaders gath-
ered in regional councils. Part 1 covers the
Northeast and the Far West, and both stories are
eerily similar Before 1492, says one council
member. New York's Mohawk Valley "might not
have been the Garden of Eden. But it was
reasonably close." Then came the Europeans
and, notes a council member, "in their search for
religious freedom, we lost ours." Narrated by Joy
Harvo, a member of the Creek tribe. (2:00)

Knee in a TV-movie from
Jane Fonda's production
company. It's the coming-
of-age saga of an aimless
young woman (Irene Bedard)
who finds her "soul" when
she joins the American Indian
Movement's '73 occupation
of the 1890 massacre
site. It's predictable and
polemical, but makes its
point sharply. My score: 6
