Daniel Day-Lewis (pictured) stars in a visually stunning adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper's 1826 classic. The story is set in New York's Adirondack Mountains in 1757, during the French and Indian War. British-born Alice and Cora Munro (Jodi May, Madeleine Stone) are being escorted by Maj. Duncan Hayward (Steven Waddington) through the wilderness to join their father, Col. Edmund Munro (Maurice Roaves), at Fort William Henry, which is under siege by the French. En route, they're defended by Pit's scout, Magua (Wes Studi), and ambushed by Hurons. But they're rescued by the Mohican Chingachgook (Russell Means). His son Uncas (Eric Schweig) and the woodcutter Hawkeye (Day-Lewis), an orphan of mesticed white settlers. What follows is a series of adventures as they try to get the women to safety, during which romance forms an attachment to Cora. The documentary --an oral history that is supplemented with still, artwork and atmospheric choreography--notes on the recollections of elder leaders gathered in regional "rounds." Part 1 covers the Northwest and the Far West, and both stories are early similar. Before 1492, says one council member, New York's Mohawk Valley "might not have been the Garden of Eden. But I was reasonably close." Then came the Europeans and, notes a council member, "In their search for religious freedom, we lost ours." Narrated by Jay Harlow, a member of the Creek tribe. (120)

Lakota Woman (Sun, TNT) --last week's component of Ted Turner's "Native American Initiative" was a six-hour documentary. This week, he's wearing his heart on his sleeve at Wounded Knee in a TV movie from Jane Fonda's production company. It's the coming-of-age saga of an aimless young woman (Jane Bedard) who finds her "soul" when she joins the American Indian Movement's '73 occupation of the 1890 massacre site. It's predictable and polarizing, but makes its point sharply. My score: 6
