Americans and Englishmen may have been allies on the battlefield, but the "invasion" of Britain by thousands of GIs stationed there before D-Day precipitated a clash of cultures that's underscored in this 1979 film. It depicts the romances that bloomed between Yanks and local girls, as exemplified by three very different affairs. A married Army captain embarks on an adulterous liaison with the small-town wife of a British naval officer away at sea. Meanwhile, a young mess sergeant begins to court a postmaster's daughter, who's already engaged to an English serviceman. And the sergeant's buddy wastes no time wooing a comedy bus conductor.
