- time, examines how freedoms in the U.S. have been
- tested over the years
- The struggles of minority groups in recent
- times are studied in two major segments. One
- deals with the internment of Japanese-Ameri-
- cans during World War II. The other traces
- the civil-rights movement of the '50s and
- '60s, including Martin Luther King's stirring
- "I have a dream" speech—and an equally
- moving interview with a black man in his
- 70s who describes a lynching he witnessed
- There are also interviews with screenwriters
- Dalton Trumbo and Alvah Bessie, who were black-
- listed during the McCarthy period; a segment with
- a cross section of Americans telling what liberty
- means to them; and, on a lighter note, an animated
- sequence showing the early travels of the Declara-
- tion of Independence
- David Brinkley is the reporter. (90 min.)
