- Debut: A six-part BBC series dramatizing the careers of 19th-century medical pioneers. The opener focuses on a little-known Hungarian obstetrician—Ignaz Semmelweis—who is generally credited with discovering the principle of contagion. In 1840s Vienna, Semmelweis is appalled by the high incidence of puerperal fever, a dread disease that strikes women after childbirth. Semmelweis links its cause to infectious particles transmitted during examinations, but his theory is ridiculed—and so is his disinfectant technique: a thorough hand-washing in an antiseptic. Dr. Jonas Salk introduces each episode. Semmelweis: Robert Lang. Hebra: David Darfield. Skoda: Wolfe Morris. Klein/John Gill: Marcusovsky Nigel Lambert. Beck: Tim Meats. Marie: Sandra Payne. Hildenbrand: Donald Bisset. Pokiltansky: Leonard Maguire. (60 min.)
