Swedish filmmakers Lennart Nilsson and Bo Erikson spent four years producing this journey inside human bodies—and captured spectacularly the conception and development of an embryo. The life process begins inside the ovaries, which contain some 500 million egg cells. During each menstrual cycle one egg matures and is drawn into one of two Fallopian tubes to await fertilization by a sperm cell—produced in the testes at a rate of 100 million every 24 hours. Vivid microscope photography shows the successful merging of the male and female cells into one cell and its 10-day trip to the uterus. There, this embryo is seen taking shape: arms and eyes "bud" during the fourth week of pregnancy; fingers become clearly defined at seven weeks; an ear begins to form at 10 weeks; and, at 14 weeks, that embryo sucks its thumb. But, the report acknowledges, what ignites a mother's contractions—and the beginning of a birth—some six months later remains a mystery.
