Grant Show and Cicely Tyson stand out in this heartwarming 1997 TV-drama directed by Peter Bogdanovich. It's the 1950s and Korean War vet Jerry Shand (Show) returns to his Southern home town as a hero after sharing a Life magazine cover with Marilyn Monroe. But that doesn't help his job prospects. His best opportunity seems to be collecting weekly funeral-insurance payments from low-income blacks.
