MOTOWN 30: WHAT'S GOIN' ON!
aired 11/25/90 [1990-11-25]
This cultural gala marks the thirtysomethingth anniversary of the Motown sound. It's a big night for rhythm and blues, all right, but the show also celebrates what Whoopi Goldberg calls in her introduction the "pride in accomplishment" of African-Americans in other areas of entertainment. For example, Debbie Allen headlines a production number that traces the roots of hip hop to African tribal dances, a Dance Theatre of Harlem couple perform a pas de deux, and Denzel Washington and Damon and Keenen Ivory Wayans reflect on the contributions of blacks to film and TV. There are also hit medleys by the Four Tops, the Temptations and Smokey Robinson; salutes to Mary Wells and Marvin Gaye by Robinson, Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle and Michael Bolton, gospel pieces sung by Knight and Tramaine Hawkins, and seriocomic vignettes featuring Robert Townsend, Maria Gibbs and Meshach Taylor (2 hrs.) Additional Highlights 'Unforgettable' Natalie Cole 'We Got Our Own Thang' Heavy D & the Boyz 'A Change Is Gonna Come' Tracy Chapman 'Who's Loving You?' Terence Trent D'Arby 'Crazy' Boys 'Ebben? Ne Andro Lontano' from Catalani's 'La Wally' Wilhelmenia Fernandez 'Music of the Night' Robert Guillaume Keep Our Love Alive Stevie Wonder
