THE BIRTH AND REBIRTH OF A LANDMARK. Documentarian Charles Guggenheim ("Yorktown") interweaves 19th-century stills and writings with contemporary film footage to chronicle the creation and restoration of the Statue of Liberty, which was first dedicated 100 years ago today. Lady Liberty is the masterpiece of French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who in 1873 began work on the 152-foot monument, basing it on clay models he had designed earlier. It was a task that demanded, says narrator Gary Merrill, "over 100,000 measurements" and hundreds of specially made tools. It also required the genius of engineer Gustav Eiffel, who designed the intricate support structure that would protect Lady Liberty against hurricane winds and extreme temperature swings. What she couldn't withstand, however, was "100 years of wind, salt air and acid rain." So in January 1984, architects and engineers from France and the U.S. began the statue's monumental restoration, which called for constructing "the world's tallest free-standing scaffold" so workers could remove the torch and repair her arm ("the most battered and fragile part of the statue"). Workers also replaced some 1800 iron support bars with those made of stainless steel.
