  • THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. (1956)
w/ Charlton Heston; Yul Brynner; Anne Baxter; Yvonne DeCarlo; Edward G. Robinson; Debra Paget; John Derek; Cedric Hardwicke; Nina Foch & Martha Scott.
Producer-director Cecil Blount DeMille (1881-1959) not only perfected the epic motion picture, he can lay claim to having invented it. 1956's The Ten Commandments ★★★★ (Sun., ABC) is actually the second time DeMille filmed the story of Moses leading the Israelites from bondage in Pharaoh's Egypt. He shot a silent version in 1923. This remake, starring Charlton Heston as Moses, was the box-office champ of 1957 and the winner of seven Academy Award nominations. First telecast (to huge ratings) in 1973, the movie has been a TV fixture ever since. Its lone Oscar was awarded to John P. Fulton for his special effects, the most impressive of which was the parting of the Red Sea. According to Exodus, the Lord drove the sea away with a strong east wind. Fulton did it by filming 300,000 gallons of water being poured into a tank. Then he reversed the footage and superimposed other footage of the Hebrews walking dry-shod across the sea bed.
