  • THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT (CC) aired 4/9/2000 [2000-04-09]
Debut: All 41 Presidents are profiled in this 10-hour series from the producer of the Emmy-winning 1988 documentary JFK: In His Own Words. Longtime Time White House correspondent Hugh Sidey hosts the series, which also draws on the commentary of Harvard historian Richard E. Neustadt. The format is thematic, and Part I focuses on four men whose "Family Ties" help land them in the Oval Office: John Quincy Adams (voice of George Will), Benjamin Harrison (former Secretary of State Alexander Haig), John Kennedy and Franklin Roosevelt, who "saw the Presidency as almost family property," says Neustadt, "and thought of the country as his patrimony."
