PIRATE TALES: 8/25/97 PIRATE TALES (Sun., TBS) This detailed two-part documentary (which con- cludes next week) tries to strip the eye- patch off our romanticized vision of the high-seas bandits. The stories of gallantry and courage here are over- shadowed by tales of cruelty and greed. I could have done without the graphic description of pirate torture, and Roger Daltrey's hokey hosting (in full Jolly Roger regalia). Pirates never seemed this dastardly in those old Errol Flynn movies—but then, they aren't as much fun here, either. My score: 5 THE GOLDEN HORDE. DRAGONHEART.(1996) w/Dennis Quaid, Sean Connery (voice) David Thewlis & Julie Christie. DRAGONHEART Dennis Quaid and the voice of Sean Connery get top billing, but it's the special-effects wizardry that drives this 1996 film, a fantasy that mixes elements of "Braveheart" with a dash of Arthu- rian legend. Quaid stars as Bowen, a cynical dragon slayer who hunts the mysterious, winged creatures— until he sides with Draco, a 43-foot dragon blessed not only with Connery's voice, but also his mannerisms (it makes the beast hard not to like). ROAR: ROAR (Mon., FOX) TV's first Celtic soap opera, set in the fifth century, fea- tures people who relax in cow-dung baths, solve their problems by butting heads, and look like Con- nan O'Brien. In the series pilot, the boyish hero (Heath Ledger) loses his family and his girlfriend but gains his destiny. His nemesis is a foxy Roman invader, played with Joan Collins-like allure by Lisa Zane. Roar's Arthurian- style romance is lightened by a sense of fun; in the lush Celtic twilight, sol- diers yell, "We're gonna scorch their arses!" My score: 7 7/14/97
