The pioneer of audience-participation talk shows is saluted on his series' silver anniversary. When The Phil Donahue Show began in Dayton, Ohio, on Nov. 6, 1967, the host was a bit nervous; his hair was a great deal darker and his first guest—appropriately controversial—was atheist Madalyn Murray O'Hair. Memorable clips from nearly 6000 Donahue programs that followed highlight this tribute, which covers such topics as show business, politics, religion, sex, racism and—most affectingly— AIDS. The salute also includes appearances by Corine Chung, Faith Daniels, Charles Grodin, Jenny Jones, Larry King, Maury Povich, Sally Jessy Raphael, Geraldo Rivera, Diana Sawyer, Jerry Springer, Gloria Steinem, Mike Wallace, Barbara Walters, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, Montel Williams and Oprah Winfrey. Some guests appear in a sketch; others introduce clips and read excerpts of "letters to Donahue." Just how lost is Donahue on his feet? Clips are provided in his performance of "Me and My Institute" (a number choreographed by Jacques D'Amboise). Also, Saturday Night Live's Phil Hartman does his Donahue impression and there are taped messages from Joan Rivers and Donahue's wife, Marlo Thomas. (2 hrs.)

Celebrating a half century of daytime drama with a family reunion of soap stars, past and present. Appearing . . . Eileen Fulton; soap matriarchs Frances Reid and Helen Wagner; A Martinez; Kim Zimmer; Victoria Wyndham; and Jacklyn Zeman. Former on-screen couples include Bill Hayes and Susan Seaforth Hayes (who became off-screen spouses), George Reinholt and Jacqueline Courtney, John McCook and Jamie Lyn Bauer, Mary Stuart and Larry Haines, and Jonathan Frid and Lara Parker (Dark Shadows' demonic duo). Agnes Nixon, Bill Bell and the late Irma Phillips are honored in film tributes to creators of daytime serials, once known as "sob stories," "suffering sagas," "washboard weepers" and ultimately "soap operas," after soap manufacturers became major sponsors. The gala also includes a salute to brides, with daytime stars modeling their characters' original wedding gowns; a look at soap-opera bloopers; clips of romances and weddings, villains and vixens; and segments on social relevance in the soaps, enduring families, and American serials televised around the world.
