20/20: 10th ANNIVERSARY RETROSPECTIVE 6/10/88
The series celebrates its first decade with a com-
pendium of highlights.
Hugh Downs, who has hosted 20/20 since
its second show, and Barbara Walters recall
some of their memorable reports.
For Walters, they include interviews with Presi-
dent Reagan (1981), First Lady Nancy Reagan
(1986), activist Abbie Hoffman (1980), Prince
Charles (1984), Betty Ford (1987) and Donna
Rice (1987). Downs, meanwhile, remembers his
adventure segments, including a trip to the South
Pole (1983) and a yacht race to Bermuda (1985).
Also "Moment of Crisis" footage, including a
New Orleans skyscraper fire in 1980 and the
assassination of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat
in 1981; excerpts of investigative stories by John
Stossel, Tom Jarriel and Gerald Rivers; "Per-
sonal Touch" talks with White House press
secretary James Brady (1986), Stevie Wonder
(1985) and violinist Itzhak Perlman (1985); and
profiles, including Barbara Streisand, George
Burns and Steven Spielberg (2 hrs.)

60 MINUTES: COMMEMORATING 20 YEARS OF STORIES 10/10/88
"The day 60 Minutes went on the air," Harry Rea-
soner remembers, "no one knew what an syndical
was or what Acquired Immune Deficiency Syn-
drome was. And a surrogate mother was someone
who looked after your kids."
That day was Tuesday, Sept. 24, 1968, and to-
night, CBS's Sunday staple begins a two-part retro-
spective on two decades of profiles, topical stories
and muckraking reports. Critics called the latter
ambush journalism. They became a series trade-
mark, sometimes elaborately mounted.
One example was a 1978 segment in which the
series set up a phony clinic in Chicago to expose a
Medicaid kickback scheme. In a less covert 1977
story, Mike Wallace "ambushed" a man running a
California "college" where master's degrees could
be bought for $250.
Part I (which concentrates on the first 10 years)
also recalls memorable interviews with Presidential
nominee Richard Nixon (1968), who speaks of "re-
storing respect to the Presidency," and Nixon aide
John Ehrlichman, who scoffs "Cover-up? What
cover-up?" in a 1973 talk about Watergate.
Then there's the magnificent 94-year-old
conductor Leopold Stokowski (1977), who
says he remained so active because "I've
tried the opposite and it's boring." (60 min.)

The investigative newshounds at 60 Minutes celebrate 20 years of topical muck-
raking, championing the oppressed, tilting at windmills and profiling newsmakers
with a two-part special (concluding next week at this time). Tonight's first half,
appropriately enough, examines segments from the seminal newsmagazine's first

THE WAY WE WERE
A nostalgic remembrance of a TV sitcom that
cashed in on a nostalgia craze.
Set mainly during the 1960s, Happy Days
(1974-84) viewed the Eisenhower era through
rose-colored glasses, depicting a period of
American innocence frozen in time (between
World War II and the tumultuous '60s. Viewers
flocked to it. At the end of the 1977 season,
Happy Days bumped All in the Family from the
No. 1 spot in the ratings.
This retrospective mines memories from pro-
ducer Garry Marshall and reunited cast mem-
bers, including Ron Howard (Richie Cunning-
ham), Henry Winkler ("The Fonz"), Marion Ross
(Marion Cunningham), Tom Bosley (Howard
Cunningham), Anson Williams (Potsie), Donny
Most (Ralph Malp), Scott Baio (Chachi) and Pat
Morita (Arnold).
They look back at themselves in an ample
compilation of clips, which also features the 1975
episode that introduced Poniay Marshall and
Cindy Williams as Laverne and Shirley; and the
'78 sitcom debut of Robin Williams as the zany
extraterrestrial Mork. (96 min.)

Reflecting on her series' seven-year
run on Mary Tyler Moore: The 20th
Anniversary Show (which first aired in
February), Moore says: "We had fun
... we didn't change the world."
True enough, but the retrospective sam-
ples the sitcom's glowing legacy of
witty, sometimes poignant episodes en-
acted by a fine ensemble. 2/91
