  • F.D.R.: THE MAN WHO CHANGED AMERICA
  • Special: Tracing the Presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt—from the Depression to World War II. Using newsreel footage and excerpts from his speeches, this documentary concentrates on Mr. Roosevelt's public life, the impact of his reforms, and the era in which he rose to power. In 1932, bread lines, bank closures and shantytowns offer a grim backdrop to F.D.R.'s ebullient campaign for the White House. Once in office, he is shown setting in motion a tide of legislation that would reopen the banks, put millions back-to work in public-service jobs and establish social-security benefits. It was a New Deal that was not without its critics, who are heard from on several counts—perhaps most vocally over the President's attempt to alter the Supreme Court by appointing new justices and retiring others. (F.D.R. took this action after some of his sweeping reforms were declared unconstitutional.) Henry Fonda narrates the program, which was written by Emmy winner Andrew Rooney. (60 min.) (1932) 1932
  • STALIN—Profile
  • Special: A portrait of Joseph Stalin as drawn by his supporters, his enemies and Stalin himself. Documentary films combine with subjective material such as poems and folk songs to trace Stalin's life from his peasant beginnings through the Russian revolution, the great purges and the great wars, both hot and cold. Jill Balcon recites "Requiem," a cycle of poems by Anna Akhmatova. Michael Gough narrates the documentary, first telecast in 1973 (1973) 1973
