DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER 8:00
Sean Connery's last performance as James Bond was thought by critics to be one of his best.
In this 1971 adventure, Agent 007 is assigned to infiltrate a gang of diamond smugglers. It's a task that takes Bond from the Netherlands to Nevada and, unexpectedly, into the lair of an old enemy: criminal mastermind Ernst Stavro Blofeld.
While the plot defies logic, it hardly matters. What does matter is the film's tongue-in-cheek dialogue, vigorous action (like a getaway by moon buggy), nasty villains and fiery climax (a battle aboard an offshore oil rig).
Directed by Guy Hamilton, who also filmed the Bond entries "Goldfinger" and "Live and Let Die."

An acclaimed dramatic musical. Set in 1931 Berlin during the rise of the Nazis, "Cabaret" interweaves song and drama to evoke the era's glitter and gloom. Its microcosm: the sleazy nightspot called the Kit-Kat Klub.
In Oscar-winning roles, Liza Minnelli plays the flighty, stardom-seeking Sally Bowles, a cabaret entertainer flaunting outré makeup and an air of "divine decadence"; and Joel Grey is the vulgar, chalk-faced emcee, leeringly promoting a devil-may-care world. Michael York portrays Brian Roberts, a visiting, sensitive young Englishman who becomes involved with Sally.
It's not a "happy" musical, as most critics noted, alluding to the movie's mood of desperation and amorality. But neither did they find it grim, citing in John Kander and Fred Ebb's score—and in Bob Fosse's Oscar-winning direction—a dynamic, commanding energy.

Science fiction with a satirical sting in the first—and generally considered the best—of the "Apes" movies, Charlton Heston plays an astronaut named Taylor who has crash-landed on a planet where humans are mute savages: despised, preyed upon and enslaved by a race of civilized apes.
The fun of the film lies in some of the dialogue ("Remember," a friendly simian tells Heston, "all humans look alike to most apes"), the action sequences, and familiar faces in monkey makeup that won a special Academy Award.
Rod Serling and Michael Wilson adapted the script from a novel by Pierre Boulle ("Monkey Planet"). Franklin J. Schaffner ("Patton") directed this 1968 film, which has spawned four sequels—and a short-lived television series.

A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE
At the heart of the story is the seething confrontation between coarse, brawling Stanley Kowalski (Marlon Brando in the role that made him a star) and his visiting sister-in-law, Blanche du Bois (Vivien Leigh), a faded Southern belle desperately clinging to memories, illusions and dreams.
The action of this 1951 film is almost brutally realistic, yet it's balanced by Williams' dialogue and Elia Kazan's sensitive direction—by a kind of poetry: passionate in moments of anger, tender in scenes of pathos.
Oscars were won by Miss Leigh and, in supporting roles, by Karl Malden (as Mitch) and Kim Hunter (Stella). (Repeat; 2 hrs., 30 min.)
