GREAT DEPRESSION (CC) 2:0037625
In 1927, people from across America started
going to Detroit in search of "A Job at Ford's."
Archival footage and interviews recall million-
aire automaker Henry Ford's empire; how
easy credit led Americans to live beyond their
means; and the impact of the 1929 stock-mar-
ket crash. "The Road to Rock Bottom" exam-
ines the devastation of farms by droughts and
foreclosures; the march on Washington, D.C.,
by 20,000 WWI vets seeking service bonuses.

1. THE GARDEN OF
FORKING PATHS
Debut: The history, people and culture of Latin
America and the Caribbean are explored in an
enlightening 10-part series narrated by Raul
Julia. The opener visits Argentina—which is "as
much a nation of immigrants as the United
States," says Julia. The hour blends film clips
with profiles of Argentines to survey the country's
development. Included are Juan Peron's ascen-
sion to power, which culminated in his election to
the Presidency in 1946; and the role of his wife,
Eva, "whose rise from obscure poverty added to
his appeal among workers." Also examined is
the violent oppression practiced during the "Dirty
War" of the late '70s; the 1982 invasion of the
Falkland Islands; and the impact of current Presi-
dent Carlos Menum. (60 min.)
