POLICING THE STREETS
IN THE SOVIET UNION

This edition of the crime-vivid documentary
series follows Soviet cops on their beats to pro-
vide a glimpse of crime and punishment inside
the USSR.
American and Soviet camera crews spent 16
days on the streets of Moscow and Leningrad,
and at a Moscow police training academy. What
they filmed shows that many of the tasks Soviet
cops must handle would be familiar to their West-
ern counterparts. Actually Perestroika doesn't turn up
any bodies in Gorky Park, but drunks are carted
off for detoxification and burglaries are investigated.
Some of the crimes seem characteristically
Soviet: a young man is seized for selling goods
on the black market; several American students
are arrested after a knife fight with ethnic Rus-
sians; police watch for "sales fraud" as grocers
weigh cucumbers for a long line of shoppers.
The Soviets are not without domestic disputes,
homicides and drug dealers, one of whom is ar-
rested after his young son eagerly shows his fa-
ther's drug paraphernalia to the police. These
cops even have high-speed pursuits, such as in a
wild sequence in which detectives hang on to
the hood of a car driven by a distraught woman
trying to escape their questioning. (60 min.)
Cops (Sat., Fox) goes to Leningrad and
Moscow for an unprecedented glimpse of
Soviet law enforcement, with no restric-
tions placed on the filmmakers. The
crimes are familiar—gang violence, drunk-
enness, drug trafficking and murder—but
Soviet cops don't have to read defendants
their rights, and some of their punish-
ments are more severe than ours. 7/15/89

RUTHLESS PEOPLE. (1986)
Bette Midler and Danny DeVito are mercilessly
funny in this 1986 caper directed by David Zuck-
er, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker—the racy
crew that made "Airplane!" fly and bred the
"Naked Gun."
Clothing tycoon Sam Stone (DeVito) has de-
signs on murdering his obnoxious wife Barbara
(Midler) so he can live happily ever after with his
mistress Carol (Anita Morris). Arriving home with
chloroform in hand, Stone receives a phone call:
Barbara has been kidnapped, and will be killed if
a $300,000 ransom isn't paid.
A jubilant Stone thinks that his problems are
solved, but in reality they're just beginning. The
heartless kidnappers are actually a harmless-
bumbling couple named Ken and Sandy Kessler
(Judge Reinhold, Helen Slater), who are out to
get back at Stone for stealing and capitalizing on
Sandy's idea for spandex miniskirts. And Stone's
beloved Carol is actually a conniving fraud, intent
on videotaping Stone murdering his wife so that
she can blackmail him and run off with her dem-
ented boyfriend (Bill Pullman).
