1621. BRUCE WILLIS
DIE HARD (1988)
Bruce Willis takes on a gang of terrorists in a 1988 action yarn set
in a Los Angeles skyscraper.
That's where New York cop John McClane (Willis) comes to
meet his estranged wife, Holly (Bonnie Bedelia), for a Christmas
reunion with their kids. John is in no holiday mood--he's still
smarting over Holly's leaving him to relocate with her job. But
yuletide domestic problems become the least of his worries after
machine gun-wielding thugs raid Holly's company party. The
gang's ruthless leader is Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), who's af-
ter $640 million in bonds locked inside an electromagnetic vault.
McClane, who escapes, becomes a wild card as Gruber me-
thodically plays out his hand. After dispatching one terrorist,
McClane sends the body to Gruber with a sign that says: "Now I
have a machine gun. Ho-Ho-Ha." Gruber isn't amused, and what
follows is a battle of wits as well as weapons. But while Gruber is
dealing from strength, McClane's only hope is a walkie-talkie link
to an off-duty police sergeant (Reginald VelJohnson) outside.
Rated R for strong language, violence and partial nudity. John
McTiernan ("Predator") directed. Kart: Alexander Godunov. Har-
ry: Hart Bochner. Robinson: Paul Gleason. (2 hrs., 15 min.)

1623. A FISH CALLED WANDA
A Monty Pythonesque crime farce that was one
of the big box-office catches of 1988.
Loaded with puns, sight gags and an irrever-
ence that borders on the tasteless, the film is
about a London diamond heist pulled off by a du-
plicitous American named Wanda (Jamie Lee
Curts) and three cohorts: her Cockney boyfriend,
George (Tom Georgeson); a meek, stuttering
animal lover named Ken (Michael Palin); and the
maniacally off-the-wall Otto (Best Supporting Ac-
tor Kevin Kline), who has Rambo delusions and a
deep sympathy for the British. If it weren't for the
U.S., Otto asserts, England would be "the small-
est colony of the Soviet empire."
After the robbery, double-crossers Wanda and
Otto arrange for George to be arrested, but dis-
cover that he has hidden the loot. Enter George's
barrister, Archie Leach (John Cleese), on whom
Wanda turns her considerable charms in the
hope that he will part with some information.
Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Kline
Leach is no Cary Grant in the romance depart-
ment, but for this dish called Wanda he finds
himself happily shedding his stud demeanor.
Rated R: strong language, sexual situation.
Charles Crichton's direction and Cleese's score
received Oscar nominations. Wendy: Mana A-
lan. Mrs. Cosdy: Patricia Hayes. Pons: Cyth
Caylor. Inspector: Peter Jonfield. (1 hr., 50 min.)

MOONSTRUCK, Cher..(1987)
Movie: The folks who give out the Oscars were so enamored of 1987's
"Moonstruck" that they gave it three big ones: Best Actress (Cher), Supporting
Actress (Olympia Dukakis) and Screenplay (John Patrick Shanley). It's not hard to
see why. Director Norman Jewison's movie is a deft, delightful romantic comedy
about Brooklyn Italian-Americans falling in love with people they shouldn't.

THE APARTMENT. (BW)(1960)
5 Oscars. Jack Lemmon, Shirley
MacLaine & Fred MacMurray.
