## HEADING: NYPD Blue ## LEFT COLUMN 1818. NYPD Blue NYPD Blue ABC, Thursday, 9 P.M. (ET) NYPD Blue is the year's best new show. So let's just get past the bullshit and hype over its alleged framing—the art, flash, and so-on words that caused people who haven't even seen the show to picket the network and demand bans. First, NYPD is hard- by-hand. I might not let a child watch, but I have seen nicer scenes on PBS. Consider, and many more carries. Second, I have a message for these self-ap- pointed guardians of my morals: If you don't want to watch the show, then change the channel! But don't you dare try to stop me from watching. NYPD Blue is a rich, deep, red wine of a drama starring David Caruso, an out- standing actor who makes his break- through here playing a New York detec- tive Laval with many troubles but few rewards (his wife [Gail Light's writing Sherry Stringfield] left him because she hates worrying about his work—but she still can't help sleeping with him. His partner [Al Street Blue] amazing Dennis Franz in drinking and headed for the deep end where he is shot by mob slime. And his lover (Amy Brenneman) is turned up as ways I won't give away. This is one fine cast. Like co-creator Steven Bochco's other shows, Hill Street Blues and L.A. Law, NYPD creates characters who breathe and weave plottlines like a dense Per- son rag. It both brings out Bochco's best and attacks his worst (a tendency to turn characters into ciphers or whiners). But unlike other Bochco shows, this is not as remorseful purge. It's a show about one good but imperfect man who faces pressure and tries to figure out what is right. It is an unusually moral show. Is it also the most human of Bochco's shows and the most real—which is pro- bably the point of includ- ing sex (but nothing as ob- scene and exploitative as that on The A-Team or Miami Vice). Bochco didn't put a there to get pity (I hope he's not that cynical). He made sex, violence, and anger part of NYPD because they are part of life. So this is not an adult show in the dirty sense of the word. It is a grownup show, wise and frank. TV needs more shows like this. And that's why I get upset with those who would censor television shows right upfront: the mob bombing NYPD; or the church men who attacked me for hiring senior Chinn, or the Congressman who wants to avoid a chip in TV that could block any show marked with a "V" for vi- olence. You rational prigs and virtuous should not have any T.V. can be set by the body count, the square arches of Boch, the number of sexuality words, or the nasty reputation alone.
