NYPD Blue NYPD Blue ABC Tuesdays 10 PM (ET) NYPD Blue is the year's best new show So let's get past the hubbub and hype over its alleged rating—the sex, blood, and no-no words that caused people who hadn't even seen the show to picket the network and threaten boycotts. First, NYPD is hardly hard. I might not let a child watch, but I have seen racy scenes on PBS, Dragnet, and many street corners. Second, I have a message for these self-appointed guardians of my morals: If you don't want to watch the show, then change the channel! But don't you dare try to stop me from watching. NYPD Blue is a rich, deep, red wine of a drama starring David Caruso, an outstanding actor who makes his break-through here playing a New York detective faced with many troubles but few rewards. His wife (Golding Light's stunning Sherry Stringfield) left him because she hates worrying about his work—but she still can't help sleeping with him. His partner Hal Street Blue's amazing Dennis Franz is drinking and headed for the deep end when he's shot by a mad slimer. And his latest date (Amy Brenneman) is messed up in ways I won't give away. This is one fine cast. Like co-creator Steven Bochco's other shows, Hill Street Blues and L.A. Law, NYPD creates characters who breathe and weave plotlines like a dense Pen sex, violence, and anger part of NYPD because they are part of life. So that is not an whole show in the dirty sense of the word. It is a growing-up show, wise and frank. TV needs more shows like this. And that's why I get upset with those who would censor television shows again unseen: the milk-hating NYPD or the church mom who attacked me for liking Cheers, or the Congressman who wants to install a chip in TV that could block any show marked with a 'V' for violence. You cannot judge and remain should not turn out you. TV can be art by the body, round the square miles of flesh, the number of smoking words, or the nasty reputation alone. You have to watch it for yourself and judge a show on its merits. And NYPD Blue is a quality show. Clapp & Gail O'Grady. To: 11/30/93 1819. NYPD BLUE 12/7/93 through 2/15/94 1820. Larry Joshua plays the bureaucratic captain. 1823. NYPD BLUE: 4/4/95 through 11/14/95 On the day before his wedding to Assistant DA Sylvia Costas (Sharon Lawrence), surly Det. Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) is approaching his breaking point. In addition to handling his anxiety about the wedding, he and best man Simone (Jimmy Smits) must follow up on a hot tip that links a junkie to a homicide. Meanwhile, a hostile precinct sergeant puts Lt. Fancy's brother (Michael Jai White) in a jam with Internal Affairs; and Simone confronts Russell (Kim Delaney) about her drinking problem.
