Doctor Dean (weekdays, NBC)—John Tesh's day-time interview show died (was I the only person out here who thought it was OK?) and NBC replaced it with a daily medical show starring radio doc Dean Edell. At first glance, it's slick, waiting-room TV. At second glance, it's just another excuse for people to come on daytime television and reveal intimate secrets of their private lives: "I have at least one orgasm every day," says a 70-year-old woman, "and more if I can.... And I can." (The audience applauds.) But at third glance, the show does dispense real information; it's useful. In the pantheon of daytime TV, I guess that beats Sally Jessy Raphael's mothers who complain about their daughters who spit. My score: 7

- SECRET OF LIFE: DNA
Debut: THE IMMORTAL THREAD. 9/26/93 Debut: Biologist David Suzuki hosts an eight-hour study of DNA and gene therapy. The first hour, "The Immortal Thread," concerns the DNA molecule, described as a recipe for everything alive and "everything that's ever lived." Segments focus on genetic testing "for a species of bacteria that live without oxygen"; and genetic tissue. The second hour examines whether nature works by design or if the diverse species of life are "Accidents of Creation." Experiments with fish and birds suggest that "a single mistake in a critical-enough gene" allowed humans to take "the great evolution leap" that our closest cousin, the chimpanzee, didn't. (2:00).
