MICHAEL CAINE: JEKYLL & HYDE. 1/21/90 Michael Caine brings credibility and depth to the du- al roles that have served many fine actors well since Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 novella. The 'Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde,' was first adapted to the screen in 1906. That was a one-reeler with a cast of unknowns produced by pioneer American filmmaker William N. Selig. Later—and grander—movie adaptations starred John Barrymore (1920), Fredric March (a 1932 Oscar winner) and Spencer Tracy (1941). TV versions headlined Jack Palance (1968), Kirk Doug- las (a 1973 musical) and, most recently, Anthony Andrews in a 1989 Showtime production. Like those versions, this 1990 TV-movie takes some liberties with Stevenson's work. But the heart of the drama still concerns the transformation of Henry Jekyll, a benevolent physician whose exper- iments with drugs turn him into Mr. Hyde, a demonic and gruesome figure driven by violent passions.
