THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW
February 9, 1964 "The Beatles...
just received a wire from Elvis
Presley and Colonel Tom Parker
wishing them a tremendous suc-
cess in this country." Ed Sullivan
told the CBS audience. Then he
stiffly introduced the "youngsters
from Liverpool"-George Harrison,
John Lennon, Paul McCartney and
Ringo Starr-and in the deafening
high-pitched caterwaul whipped
up by hundreds of screaming girls,
the band broke into "All My Loving."
For music lovers, it was like step-
ping onto an unknown continent:
infectious, ingeniously woven pop music played with unimaginable verve. The boys wore four-button
suits, long bangs and looks of enormous amusement at the furor they had ignited. They
bowed deeply and formally after each song, concluding with "I Want to Hold Your Hand" later
in the show. At one point, the camera showed individual close-ups, with graphics providing
each musician's first name (Lennon's also read SORRY GIRLS, HE'S MARRIED). The Beatles would ap-
pear on the Sullivan show again, but it was on this night that the '50s of Elvis and the Colonel
evaporated in the brilliant white heat of the century's single greatest pop-culture event.
