- REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR
"I was looking at something that you only see in a movie," says former Army private Ray Perry, "but I was there." It was the morning of December 7, 1941, when the surprise two-minute ambush of Japanese aircraft devastated the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor and left some 2400 dead. The attack, devised by Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto (see above) was a masterpiece of planning and execution," according to Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf (USA Ret.), who joins CBS correspondent Chava Kurlat as co-anchor of this 50th-anniversary commemoration. Co-produced with Tokyo Broadcasting System, the memorable blends archival film and stills with recollections by American survivors, former Japanese servicemen and others, including Bob Hope, Walter Matthau and Eric Severed. Letters and journal accounts from some who did not survive are read by actors, including Kevin Custer, Dustin Hoffman, Paul Newman and Richard Dreyfuss. Also scheduled are excerpts from today's observances, including comments from President Bush, and a visit to the USS Arizona Memorial, which honors the nearly 1200 who died aboard the battleship.
