86. AARON'S WAY:
Can an Amish family find acceptance, happiness—and high ratings—in the
wine country of northern California? Merlin Olsen's new series, "Aaron's Way," will
find out. The opener was unavailable for preview, but here's the setup: Olsen (the
ever-earnest Father Murphy) plays Aaron Miller, an Amish farmer from Pennsylvania
whose son has left Amish society for California. There, he gets involved with (1)
grapevines (2) Susannah (Kathleen York), who is going to have his child, and (3) a
fatal wind-surfing accident. The Lincolnesque Aaron comes out for the memorial
service and then brings his whole brood (wife and three children) along to help
bring in the grapes and populate the series. While there's obviously enough room
in this premise for all kinds of cross-cultural confusion, the success of the series
will probably depend on your affection for Merlin Olsen. (8 PM 2) 3/9/88

buffs: The Ring of Truth, in which MIT
physicist Philip Morrison looks at the tools
of the scientist's trade to see "how we
know what we know." In Part 1 of this six-
part series (which Don Merrill praises in
his review on page 39), Morrison looks in-
to "Looking," and the instruments science
has devised to help us do it.

Debut: A juicy political thriller with enough plot
twists to sustain suspense over the course of
three nights.
Adapted by Steve Schaefer from his novel,
the miniseries revolves around a besotted
senator from Texas named Terrence Fallon
(Harry Hamlin), who's shot--on live TV--dur-
ing the assassination of a Nicaraguan contra
leader in Washington. At the scene, the
wounded senator manages to deliver an im-
passioned plea on behalf of the Contras that
makes him famous--and, to party strategists
anxious to retain control of the White House,
an appealing Vice Presidential candidate.
As the Fallon campaign builds momentum
under the direction of his press aide and mis-
tress (Linda Kozlowski), a veteran FBI agent
(Richard Loggia) and his rookie partner (Lance
Gustaf) launch an investigation into the
assassination that unearths evidence of du-
plicity and cover-up.
