Escape," you'll enjoy this
eponymous report on the
76 Allied airmen who dug
their way out of a German
prison camp. As historians and archae-
ologists search for tunnel relics, and three
survivors reminisce, "Escape" details their
engineering feat, a marvel of complexity and
resourcefulness. Prisoners used 4000 bed
slats to shore up the passage, made tools
and ventilators from condensed-milk cans
and hid tons of sand, all under the Germans'
noses. Even without Steve McQueen, this is a

continues to inspire really good dra-
mas. "Island at War" is a five-part
saga set in the Channel Islands,
the only part of Britain occupied
by the Nazis during World War II. Overrun
with Germans, the islanders resist or col-
laborate, depending on the strength of their
moral fiber. The bad guys can be good and
the good guys can be bad. Characters with
layers include the British deputy leader
(James Wilby) and the German commander
(Philip Glenister). In Week 5, the plots fuse in
a thrilling, if pat, finale. War is hell, but melo-
drama doesn't get much more enjoyable
