Well, PBS
has an import that was Germany's national
pastime a few years back.
It's *Heimat*, filmmaker Edgar Reitz's
low-key epic chronicling one local German
family from 1919 to 1982. When it
was telecast in West Germany in 1984 its
reception was *Roots*-like, but don't expect
*Heimatmania* here: it's subtitled, awfully
long (nearly 16 hours) and determinedly
arty (and much of it is in black-and-white).
What's more, this week's two-hour opening
episode is pretty slow going.
That said, it should also be stated that,
once Part 1 is behind you, this miniseries
begins to take hold. *Heimat* ("homeland"
in German) follows ordinary people, but it
follows them through an extraordinary
period in German history. It is low-key
(matter of fact would be more like it:
characters simply accommodate whatever
comes their way), but while they accommodate the wireless and the automobile
this week, next week they learn to live
with national socialism.

PART 1: ONCE UPON A TIME
Debut: A nine-part history of 20th-century Poland
blends archival footage and interviews to tell
what narrator Roger Mudd calls "a story of hope
against all odds . . . that clearly reveals the
drama and conflicts of Communist rule within the
countries of the Soviet bloc." The opener chronicles the years 1900 to 1923, when a new Polish
state emerged from World War I.
In 1900, the name of Poland did not appear on
the map of Europe, having been eliminated over
a century earlier by the partition of its territory
among the Russian, Prussian and Austrian empires. The Slavic nation, which had once "enjoyed 800 years of uninterrupted independence,"
existed only in the minds of its people.
At the outbreak of WWI, nationalist Joseph Pilsudski (1867-1935) led a small volunteer army against Russia, but some two million other Poles joined the armies of the empires that ruled the areas in which they lived. As Poles "fought Poles," the land became "a killing ground, drenched with blood, swarming with troops and refugees." At war's end, Poland was guaranteed sovereignty by the Allied victors, but more blood flowed as the Allied victors, but more blood flowed as Eastern Europe—and Poles themselves—battled over the form the country would take. By 1923 its shape at last was defined, and a Poland "broken and chaotic" was reborn. (60 min.)
