At $42 million, this science-fiction fantasy earned one of
Hollywood's highest price tags, and filmgoers made it one
of 1979's biggest box-office successes.
One reason was familiarity. Inspired by the popular TV
series that ran on NBC from 1966 to 1969 (and has been
in syndication ever since), Star Trek—The Motion Pic-
ture" reunites the original cast for an adventure not un-
like many the starship Enterprise had on the small screen
a desperate mission to save Earth from a menacing—and
extremely powerful—alien intelligence.
And while hard-core "Trekkies" will have every reason
to be pleased, there's more here than just nostalgia, chief-
ly Robert Wise's fine direction, an atmospheric score by
Jerry Goldsmith and some outstanding special effects—
designed by Douglas Trumbull and "Star Wars" veteran
John Dykstra.

Unlike 1979's first "Star Trek" movie which
some critics deemed pointless, this stellar 1982
sequel boasts an intriguing storyline that Trek-
kies will recognize from a 1967 episode of the
TV series.
It brings together Kirk (William Shatner) and
an old adversary, the sadistic Khan (Ricardo
Montalban, reprising his TV role). Some 15
years have passed since Kirk marooned the
tyrannical ruler and his band of renegades on
a barren planet. Now an admiral and no longer
galloping around the cosmos, Kirk is con-
tent merely to oversee the daily operations of
the Enterprise, until a routine inspection re-
veals unsettling information: Khan has es-
caped, commandeered a starship and is plot-
ting to take control of the universe—after he
takes revenge on his old enemy.
Directed by Nicholas Meyer ("The Day
