'Star Trek: Enterprise' heads into dry dock

For 18 years, a cluster of soundstages on the Paramount lot in Hollywood has been home to the "Star Trek" franchise -- four spinoff TV series and 10 movies in all, set in the 23rd and 24th centuries -- which defied TV logic and innumerable pundits (beginning with the NBC executives who axed the original show in 1969 after three seasons) to prove that there's an audience for a hopeful view of the future.
In keeping with that, the mood is pensive but not sad on this day during the filming of "These Are the Voyages ...," the fourth-season closer and final episode of UPN's 22nd-century prequel "Star Trek: Enterprise." It airs Friday, May 13, as the second in a pair of back-to-back episodes.
Scott Bakula, who plays Capt. Jonathan Archer, greets visitors from Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a few of the many space scientists and astronauts -- including Mike Fincke, who appears in the finale -- who have always loved "Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry's vision.
Anthony Montgomery, who plays Ensign Travis Mayweather, has ordered a soul-food buffet for everyone. As cast and crew queue up, he launches into a speech, causing Jolene Blalock, who plays Vulcan T'Pol, to lean her head on the shoulder of Connor Trinneer, who plays Chief Engineer "Trip" Tucker, and snore loudly.
Not on hand for lunch is Dominic Keating, who plays Lt. Malcolm Reed, because he has headed off across the lot for an audition. Life goes on.
What makes this finale different is that it's not only the end of "Star Trek: Enterprise" -- too soon, fans believe -- but the end of an era. The fall of 2005 will be the first without fresh "Trek" since 1987, when "Star Trek: The Next Generation" premiered in syndication.
A "Trek" feature is in the early stages of development, and no one knows if the franchise will ever return on the small screen.
"For years and years," Braga says, "the No. 1 question I was always asked was, 'Why is "Star Trek" so enduring and popular?' Now I'm being asked, 'Why is it going away?' You've got to stop and think about that. What you realize is, it answers itself when you look at those two questions."
"It's going away because it has endured for so long. It's paradoxical."
