  • GORILLAS IN THE MIST. (1988)
w/ Sigourney Weaver; Ian Cumberbatch; Bryan Brown; Rod Carr; June Hartna; Sembogane; John Omrah Maku; Van Vlacken; Consuelo Alexander
Sigourney Weaver's Oscar-nominated portrayal of naturalist Dian Fossey (1932-85) dominates this 1988 film, set against striking African backdrop. The drama opens in 1966 Kentucky, where physical therapist Fossey accesses for a job with anthropologist Louis Leakey (Ian Cumberbatch) with such persistence that he eventually gives in and sends her to Central Africa to study mountain gorillas. Her first encounter with the powerful yet shy beasts is less than cordial. Then, when National Geographic photographer Bob Campbell (Bryan Brown) arrives to make a film about Fossey, her own reaction is sentimental and nosy. In time, however, the gorillas warm up to Fossey, and she warms up to Campbell. But the mountain is never a peaceful kingdom. The gorillas are threatened by poachers and zoo brokers, whose actions are outrageous to Fossey—but important to Rwanda's economy. "Your problem," the Minister of the interior tells Fossey, "is overzealous gorilla. Mine is increasing people." Rated PG-13 for strong language and violence. Directed by Michael Apted. Close-captioned on HBO.
