A WESTERN SAGA WITH TRUE GRIT

Debut: Larry McMurty's Pulitzer novel inspires this four-part miniseries to the Old West. "Lonesome Dove" spins a colorful and often violent yarn around the exploits of two rough-and-tumble former Texas Rangers, Augustus McCrae (Robert Duvall), a philosophical, good-humored romantic, and Woodrow F. Call (Tommy Lee Jones), a stubborn, brooding realist. Out of the blue another, more reckless Ranger buddy named Jake Spoon (Robt. Urich) shows up in their sleepy Texas settlement of Lonesome Dove and spurs McCrae and Call to head a cattle drive to greener pastures in Montana. En route, the drovers run into their fair share of natural calamities and wild-and-wooly adventures. But the trek is also unexpectedly marked by a tender love affair that begins to make rivals of McCrae and Spoon as it unfolds. The third leg of Larry McMurty's sprawling cattle-drive saga, Lonesome Dove, finds the Hat Creek outfit nearing Ogallala, Neb., and a reunion with the great lost love of Gus's life, Clara Allen (Angelica Huston). Huston's portrayal of the feisty Clara is so well-done, it's not difficult to imagine why Gus has carried a torch for her. (8 PM 5) 3. The Plains. 2/7/89
If you've stayed with Lonesome Dove this far, tonight's conclusion will prove rewarding if somewhat bittersweet. Robert Duvall might as well start working on his Emmy acceptance speech, if only for the moving scene in which he and Tommy Lee Jones, as two grizzled old saddle mates, bid a reluctant adios. As this eight-hour, multimillion-dollar miniseries closes out, the drovers finally reach Montana Territory; after their grueling and tragic trek. (8 PM 5) 4. Return. 2/8/89

PART 1: THE VISION
Debut: While this three-part sequel lacks the true grit of the 1989 miniseries, Return to Lonesome Dove rides tall in the saddle as a Western in the Red River tradition.
Joe Vogt replaces Tommy Lee Jones as Woodrow Call, the stubborn, brooding former Texas Ranger who has a new vision for the 1870s breeding horses on the ranch he's begun settling in the Montana Territory.
So Call rounds up mustangs in Texas and gathers a crew for a trip to Big Sky country that uncovers old wounds, tests loyalties and attracts villains.
Filmed on location in Montana, the drama re-unites several Lonesome Dove cast members, including Rick Schroder as the innocent, slicky Newt Dallas (2 hrs) Additional Cast: 11/16/93

Lonesome Dove: The Series (syndicated; check local listings)—It looks terrific (stunning Alberta locations sub for Montana, where Newt Call now finds himself). And stars Scott Bairstow and Christianne Hirt are likable. The first two episodes are saddled with too many late-20th-centuryisms, but director Sidney Furie keeps things moving, and he knows when to point the camera at the scenery. My score (0 to 10): 7

Set mostly in early 1840s Texas, this two-part 1996 TV-movie spins a colorful yarn around Dove's two principals, the brash Augustus McCrae (David Arquette) and the hot-headed Woodrow Call (Jonny Lee Miller), chronicling their coming-of-age as Rangers.
