They're "part cop, part spy, and part human shield," says Steve Ford of the government agents sworn to protect the U.S. President and the subject of NBC's new Secret Service, which he hosts. As the son of former President Gerald Ford, Steve should know: his family spent three years under Service surveillance, a benefit that had its pluses (agents foiled two assassination attempts on his dad) and minuses. Like when he went out on a date. "I'd call up a restaurant and make a reservation for two tables. And then I'd add, 'Don't make them too close together.' The maitre d' would think I was a weirdo." Steve also recalls the day his protection ended. "I was watching Jimmy Carter's inauguration on TV, and I was playing cards with the agents. The minute Carter took the oath, they just unplugged their radios, got up and left. I had a good hand and I never got to play it."
