THE FIRST VISION:
Why was the First Vision given when
it was? Time. Place. Family.

BOOK OF JAMES CONTROVERSIAL: Luther
termed it an "Epistle of Straw."
Most important revelation of this
dispensation may be when Joseph read
James 1:5 & gets revelation that
tells him to go & get a revelation.
VARIOUS ACCOUNTS OF THE FIRST VISION:
1832 Account: First published was by
Orson Pratt in England. Joseph is
worried about his sins AND the sins
of the world (from age 12) & told
that his sins are forgiven. Joseph
was filled with love for many days.
Joseph was concerned that the fire
would burn down the grove.
1835 Account: (To Joshua the Jewish
minister- a false prophet. "I saw
many angels AND many other things
did He tell me.
1838 Account: This is the account
Cannonized in P.of G.P. in 1842.
(Wentworth) Father & Son exactly
resemble each other and are seperate
beings. Church restored thru Joseph.
WHY DIFFERENT ACCOUNTS? Different
audiences, times & conditions.
4 Gospels are different accounts of
the same story of Jesus. Paul told
various accounts of his conversion on
the road to Damascus. etc.
JS-H.: 1: 15-17 WHAT IS THE FIRST WORD
OF GOD IN THIS DISPENSATION? JOSEPH.
(means "He who gathers" (The very
last words in the P.of G.P. are the
name of the man who gave them to us—
JOSEPH SMITH.
CALLING OF PROPHETS — ESTABLISH ZION:
Adam, Enoch, Moses, Noah, Elijah, Elias
(Abraham), Peter James & John all
appeared to Joseph Smith. Moses 1:20.
DRESS CODE: Clothed with Power & Glory.
(Discernment), Robes of righteousness.
ENOCH: Called by God. Responsibility
to teach repentance. Enoch is slow of
speech, stutters, shy and afraid.
(Pres. Holland.) Moses 7: "How can You
Weep?" GOD'S INFINITY DOES NOT PRECLUDE
EITHER HIS INTIMACY OR IMMEDIACY.

Abraham 1: 21 Ham's wife is Egyptus and
carried curse thru flood. Their daughter
was named Egyptus also & founds Egypt.
Biblical idea of curse = lost blessings
or privlidges- not a hex.

JOSEPH SMITH - MATTHEW:
Prophet = One who is called. Isa. 43:11
Joseph was translating the Old Testament
and only got up to 20 chapters in Genises
when he is told to translate the N.T.

1830 First Conference of Church. Accept.
Sec. 20 & 22 of D.& C.
1842 WENTWORTH LETTER starts with (1.) The
First Vision. (2.) Coming of Moroni. and
(3.) Statements of Belief. Not numbered
or named until 1890, but cannonized in
P.of G.P. in 1880.
QUICK REVIEW:
Joseph Smith was a master of understatement.
ie: He undertold a story. He didn't tell
more than is needed to know.

THE NEW TESTAMENT: THE 4 GOSPELS:
Testament is witness. Could be called
the NEW COVENANT. Jer. 31: 31-33
The New Covenant is a continuation of the
Old Covenant.
