Bob's assignment this time out: find answers to the question "Who makes the world laugh?" And to do it, he has gathered an impressive array of guests—both on-stage and in vintage clips. Conducting the in-studio funny business with Hope are Real Person Skip Stephenson; professional hausfrau Erma Bombeck; Jonathan Winters, who sketches political vote-lust; and Art Buchwald, who explains how Washington newshounds get "scoops." Going back a bit for more political humor, Bob unreels a 1930s clip featuring Will Rogers talking with FDR and about Calvin Coolidge; and a 1938 Robert Benchley piece about income taxes. And going back even further—to 1909—he screens a Mark Twain sequence that was shot by a Thomas Edison film crew. Segments of more recent vintage (which were still being edited at press time) showcase Jack Benny, Milton Berle, George Burns, George Carlin, Jimmy Durante, Jackie Gleason, Steve Martin, Bob Newhart, Richard Pryor, Red Skelton and Eddie Murphy (as Stevie Wonder).
