Movie: According to director Francis
Mankiewicz, "Murders are always mys-
teries. You always wonder at what stage
something clicks." It clicks in a "collision
of circumstances" in the conclusion of
Mankiewicz's "Conspiracy of Silence,"
a ★★★ 1991 Canadian TV-movie that
re-creates with harrowing intensity the
murder of a Cree woman, abducted by
four drunken, young white men on a
cold November night in 1971. Location
footage in Sturgeon Falls, Ont., lends real-
ism to the drama.

Joe McGinniss's meticulous best seller about
the Jeffrey MacDonald murder case receives
an absorbing dramatization in this two-part
1984 TV-movie.
In the middle of the night of Feb. 17, 1970,
the pregnant wife and two young daughters
of the respected Green Beret physician were
brutally killed in the family's apartment at
Fort Bragg, N.C. Three months later, the Ar-
my charged MacDonald with the homicides,
but the final verdict in the case was not to
come for nine years.
The first part of "Fatal Vision" traces Mac-
Donald's case up through the initial Army
hearings. He maintains that four crazed hip-
pies burst into his apartment, rendered him
unconscious and, in the manner of the
Charles Manson murders, butchered his
family. The crime is re-created through Mac-
Donald's eyes, in such a way as to verify his
Barry Newman and Gary Cole
story. But discrepancies arise that raise
grave doubts in the mind of one of his
staunchest defenders, his father-in-law Fred-
dy Kassab (Karl Malden).

Ed Asner star in a fact-based, four-hour mini-series
based on the best-seller by Joe McGuinniss. A Family
is ripped apart in the aftermath of a father's murder
and the near-fatal attack on his wife. As she struggles
to recover physically, the mother is psychologically torn
by mounting evidence that the killer is someone very
close to her. Part 2 is scheduled to air: Tuesday, May
19.
