AMERICA'S
FUNNIEST
PEOPLE

Talent is rare, that's who more stars
and bigwigs make all that money.
The amateur clowns who send their
attempts to this weekly half hour
(Thursdays at 8:30 PM, EST) on ABC are
giving us their best material; we have to
answer the question: "Are they funny?"

Here is a young man who proudly
announced "my impression of barn
flying." Whereupon he lies down on the
asphalt and proceeds to vomit and wig-
gle for a half minute. Here is another
joker, whose gift is to spit brilliant balls
out of his mouth onto the camera point.
Almost.

Barking like a dog seems to be a
popular pastime out there, and almost
everyone does a terrible impression of
George Bush. Some of this is so awful
it's funny; most of it is so awful it's just
awful. But the amateur performers are
clearly having such a giddy time that we
sometimes have to smile along with
them. One young woman did a routine
to make a mouth and squeezed its sides
to make it say, "I'm Tommy Tomato. I
don't feel so good." Then she squeezed
it harder, causing Tommy to pulse his
little insides out. I made myself do 20
laps for laughing at that one.

This show is, of course, an offshoot
of America's Funniest Home Videos,
which one would think had exhausted all
our needs for pictures of people squeezing
their faces and spilling food on their
children. Through the new show seems
to draw some of the same video gags,
its theme is slightly different: the en-
trants are clearly trying to be funny,
whereas contributors to its predecessor
