7026. Review By Robert MacKenzie 5/20/90 1/13/91 AMERICA'S FUNNIEST HOME VIDEOS This weekly half hour (Sundays at 8 P.M. [ET] on ABC) brings new meaning to the phrase "low budget," yet it shook up 60 Minutes and is taking a big bite out of Murder, She Wrote. Why are millions tuning in to watch babies drool and grown-ups fall out of hammocks? Perhaps partly because home-video making is a tremendously popular pastime and partly because the show taps into an appeal as old as sex and almost as irresistible: slapstick. It's odd that physical comedians have disappeared when we all still take such joy in watching some poor dope walk into a tree or lose his pants. But the inadvertent clowns in these snippets of home videotape will do until Laurel and Hardy come back. There's a lot of deliberate clowning in these tapes, but the best clips are of unpredictable accidents and pratfalls that happened to occur while the camera was rolling on some domestic scene or other. A happy groom picks up his bride—and they both fall over. A homeowner leaps onto his diving board, which breaks and dumps him into the pool. A back-yard touch-football game ends when the runner hits a fence and the fence collapses. Some of these moments are falling-down funny, mostly because the victims are genuinely surprised and often because they're getting a just comeuppance. The three guys who showed off for the camera by walking around on a frozen swimming pool were asking for a cold bath—and got one. The tapes are introduced by host Bob Saget (above), a lanky, attractive young man who unfortunately has picked up the artificial style of the comedy clubs. He doesn't seem to take much genuine joy in the funny videotapes; he's thinking about his next joke. But to give him credit, he is carrying a big load: he's a co-writer of Videos, not to mention a costar of an ABC sitcom, Full House. He needs someone else on stage to bounce lines off. Kids, animals and weddings frequently show up in the tapes, since those are the favorite subjects of home-video makers. The kids eat flies, lick windows, punch one another. A cat tries to catch the race cars it sees on a TV screen. A dog joins a conga line. Some scenes are rather obvious setups: if you give a baby a pickle to eat, you are pretty sure of getting a funny face. And some bits are staged for the camera by would-be Spielbergs: record pantomimes shot in distorting rear-view mirrors, takeoffs on TV commercials. These are weak stuff but often charming anyway, since the participants are so infectionally cracking themselves up. A word about the quality of the shooting in these home tapes: it's awful—dark, wobbly, full of dizzying pans and zooms. A few years ago I produced a videotape that showed how to use a camcorder. I was surprised when nobody bought it. But I should have known. We Americans think we are born knowing how to drive cars, cook and shoot pictures. TV GUIDE APRIL 14, 1990
